1. Principle:
- Cell-Free Fetal DNA (cffDNA): During pregnancy, the placenta releases small fragments of fetal DNA into the maternal bloodstream. These fragments, known as cell-free fetal DNA, can be isolated and analyzed from a maternal blood sample.
2. Procedure:
- Blood Sample Collection: A sample of the mother’s blood is taken, typically between 10 and 22 weeks of gestation.
- DNA Extraction: cffDNA is extracted from the maternal plasma.
- Sequencing and Analysis: Advanced sequencing technologies, such as next-generation sequencing (NGS), are used to analyze the cffDNA. Bioinformatic algorithms then interpret the data to identify potential genetic abnormalities.
